UM LEVEL | 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course
MQF LEVEL | 6 | ||||||||||||||||
ECTS CREDITS | 5 | ||||||||||||||||
DEPARTMENT | Radiography
DESCRIPTION | This study-unit presents radiography students with the application of theoretical radiotherapy principles into practice. It is made up of clinical practice, tutorials, demonstrations, clinical case scenarios, student centred learning and student managed learning. This study-unit will build on and develop the principles of radiotherapy and oncology, patient care and related areas and their application to clinical practice. Students will attend placement in record and verification and external beam radiotherapy planning. Clinical placements are assigned in consultation with approved clinical centres. Students will work under the direct supervision of qualified radiographers and undertake 125 hours of practice in a clinical department. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to apply students' knowledge of radiotherapy principles related to record and verification of treatment including file verification, contouring, image preparation and scheduling of treatment. It provides a practical learning environment which encourages competent, confident and safe working practices when developing and assessing external beam radiotherapy treatment plans.This study-unit aims to develop these competencies to a level 3 (a procedure carried out by the student with minimal assistance from a qualified member of staff). Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Explain the terminology used within radiotherapy and oncology; - Apply radiotherapy treatment principles in record and verification and external beam radiotherapy planning; - Appraise the working mechanisms of the equipment used to deliver radiotherapy and ancillary equipment; - Justify radiotherapy treatments for different clinical cases; - Explain in detail the procedure required to prepare a patient file for radiotherapy treatment; and - Identify dose limits for common organs at risk in relation to external beam radiotherapy treatment planning. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Access the patient file / local database for relevant information required to verify external beam radiotherapy treatment including any other treatments (e.g. chemotherapy); - Prepare a patient file for external beam radiotherapy treatment using available software; - Contour OARs and auxiliary planning structures needed for radiotherapy treatment planning; - Create an external beam radiotherapy treatment plan for common malignancies; and - Evaluate an external beam radiotherapy treatment plan using local and international guidelines.
