Study-Unit Description

CODE RAD3403

TITLE Venipuncture and Cannulation of Adult Patients

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 2

DEPARTMENT Radiography

DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides the student with the knowledge, skills and competency required to perform cannulation and venipuncture and to administer prescribed medicinals. This study-unit creates a liaison between the theoretical and the practical components of radiography.

Cannulation and venipuncture is strictly limited to adult patients only.

Issues that will be addressed in relation to radiographer-performed IV injections include:
- appropriate training and assessment of competence;
- departmental protocols and procedures;
- health and safety;
- insertion of cannulas and needles;
- allocation of responsibility;
- cost effectiveness; and
- performance monitoring.

Students are required to keep a logbook as part of this study-unit.

This is developed within a framework of audit and research.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Provide the appropriate theoretical knowledge for future radiographers to establish venous access and perform venipuncture and cannulation;
- Allow future radiographers to develop clinical expertise in intravenous injection procedures and administration;
- Administer contrast agents as part of hospital protocols and procedures;
- Identify risk factors associated with contrast administration; and
- Apply all health and safety procedures.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss the role of the radiographer in carrying out venipuncture and cannulation;
- Know the vascular system of the upper and lower limb;
- Review clinical history, such as blood results and patient parameters prior to IV administration;
- Recognise the professional and medico-legal implications of this role;
- Identify criteria under which radiographers may undertake intravenous injections;
- Review and appraise departmental protocols;
- Explain the safety precautions associated with IV administration;
- Recognise signs and symptoms of any adverse reaction to intravenous administration; and
- Apply appropriate procedures in the case of adverse contrast media reactions.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate the ability to assess risk groups and profile of the patient for suitability for intravenous injection;
- Assess clinical history, blood results and patient parameters prior to IV administration;
- Undertake the procedure for venous access and cannulation;
- Administer contrast media in accordance with protocols and procedures;
- Practice safety precautions associated with intravenous injections; and
- Apply appropriate measures to deal with any adverse reaction to intravenous administration in accordance with established procedures.
