DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is designed to encourage radiography students to apply theoretical knowledge and skills gained in previous years as well as to help them develop consistency in competencies related to the Patient Review for persons undergoing radiotherapy (RT) treatment, as well as the performance of contouring of Organs at Risk (OARs). The study-unit will include clinical demonstration and practical sessions to help guide students' practice and encourage the development of knowledge, skills and competences. Students will be expected to be competent in the evaluation of patient in an holistic manner, with focus on radiotherapy side-effects and management and contouring of OARs. Students attend for 75 hours of clinical practice related to this study-unit during the academic year out of which 60 hours are assigned within both simulated and clinical environments, where students are expected to practice under the supervision of a radiographer, and 15 hours are assigned as student independent study. The lecturers regularly meets the students for tutorials and gives each student feedback in order to ensure the development of the required clinical competencies. At the scheduled periods during the academic year a minimum of two members of staff conduct a clinical examination. Study-Unit Aims: The study-unit aims to develop knowledge, skills and competencies relating to performing patient review of patients undergoing Radiotherapy treatments and OAR contouring. This study-unit will seek to develop the knowledge and skills required to achieve the following competencies: - Perform holistic evaluations of patients undergoing radiotherapy; - Contour OARs required for planning of RT treatments. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Appraise the side-effects of radiotherapy and other cancer therapeutics; - Discuss and apply the management and prevention of such side effects; - Identify the OARs for all cancer locations; - Discuss and apply the evidence-based contouring protocols for each OAR. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to reach competency level by carrying out the procedure/s consistently well with no assistance, while able to recognise limitations and seek advice as and when required. - Use effective communication skills; - Identify, grade, manage and provide advice regarding radiotherapy side-effects; - Distinguishes side-effects occurring as a result of radiotherapy from other treatment modalities and cancer symptoms/signs; - Addresses patients' concerns related to RT or guides them accordingly; - Records the procedure accordingly; - Contours OARs using contouring software; - Apply critical thinking and knowledge obtained during the radiography course to clinical situations.
