DESCRIPTION | This unit provides HCP with the opportunity to develop clinical and academic knowledge of ultrasound and its role in the management of pregnancy. It provides the students with the necessary skills to understand the indications for ultrasound examinations, perform scans safely and competently, report on scan findings in the clinical context and when to refer patients for a more detailed assessment. The aim of the study-unit is to provide a high level of clinical expertise and students will gain their clinical experience in an approved centre. Students will be assessed on their clinical competence at the end of study unit. Study-unit Aims: This unit provides HCP with the opportunity to develop clinical and academic knowledge of ultrasound and its role in the management of pregnancy. It offers opportunity to students to develop clinical and academic knowledge of ultrasound and its role in the assessment of fetal biometry, amniotic fluid, placental and cervical assessment. It aims to equip participants with a level of competence in ultrasound scanning that will enable them to understand the indications for ultrasound examinations, perform scans safely and competently, report on scan findings in the clinical context and know when to refer patients for a detailed assessment. This study-unit will provide students with the required knowledge to be competent in selecting appropriate equipment parameters to optimise image acquisition and record optimal representative images. This study unit provides both theoretical and practical training, with a significant emphasis on clinical experience. The areas dealt with in this study unit will include: - Ultrasound scanning; - Ethical dilemmas in obstetric care; - Early pregnancy screening and complications; - Clinical management of obstetric complications; - Second and third trimester scanning protocols; - Invasive obstetric ultrasound procedures; - Postnatal ultrasound. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • demonstrate an in-depth, specialist knowledge of normal and abnormal ultrasound appearances and techniques relevant to obstetric ultrasound; • demonstrate an understanding of concepts, information and techniques at the forefront of obstetric ultrasound practice; • critically and creatively evaluate current issues, research and evidence based practice relating to obstetric ultrasound; • take a proactive, self-reflective role in working and to develop professional relationships with others; • demonstrate effective decision making skills in complex and unpredictable situations. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • competently perform ultrasound examinations; • have specialist knowledge of relevant techniques; • assess the patient’s needs both physically and psychologically; • write reports; • recognise both the normal and abnormal appearances; • critically reflect upon the practice and the role of medical ultrasound; • demonstrate effective decision making skills in complex and unpredictable situations; • appraise current literature/research studies, incorporating evidence based practice.
