DESCRIPTION | This study-unit focuses on intra-abdominal complications secondary to complex obstetric and gynaecology pathologies. This study unit will enable students to correlate anatomy, physiology and pathology to ultrasound practice and the clinical presentation of the patient. In this study-unit, the following are dealt with: - Normal anatomy/variants of abdominal and pelvic organs and structures; - Cross sectional anatomy of the abdomen and pelvis; - Physiology of the abdomen and pelvis - Intra-abdominal complexities secondary to obstetric and gynaecological pathology Students will be assessed in applied pathologies through the use of the Simulated assessment (Scantrainer). Study-Unit Aims: - This study-unit enables students to gain knowledge of the principles of anatomy, physiology and pathology in relation to abdominal and pelvic ultrasound. - To provide a solid understanding of intra-abdominal pathological developments following the diagnosis of female pelvic abnormalities. - To enable students to perform a more thorough ultrasound examination if and when required. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify obstetric and gynaecological pathologies as well as the anatomy and physiology of related abdominal organs; - Apply into practice care pathways in adverse diagnoses; - Apply gained knowledge into clinical practice during ultrasound scanning; - Acquire, interpret and disseminate relevant diagnostic information to members of the healthcare team; - Critically evaluate clinical and other relevant information to determine when additional examinations / procedures are required; - Assess and respond to an individual's physical and psychological care needs during the examination. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Use this knowledge to optimise ultrasound scanning. - Demonstrate an in-depth, specialist knowledge of normal and abnormal ultrasound appearances and techniques relevant to the region being scanned; - Demonstrate an understanding of concepts, information and techniques at the forefront of complex imaging practice; - Develop professional relationships with other members of the healthcare team; - Demonstrate effective decision-making skills in complex and unpredictable situations.
