DESCRIPTION | This study-unit aims at introducing the students to the dental operatory and offers in-depth coverage of the various instruments and equipment used both intra-orally and extra-orally for the provision of different treatment modalities in all the different fields of dental practice, including Conservative Dentistry (including Endodontics), Oral Surgery, Periodontics, Orthodontics and Prosthodontics. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims at providing students with a structured course that will: - Familiarise them with the instruments and equipment used in the different specialties of Dentistry; - Give students the knowledge required to safely set up, utilise, and maintain different instruments and equipment used in dental practice. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Classify instruments and match instrument design to its action and intended purpose; - Name different pieces of equipment used in various dental procedures and express how these function; - Identify the instruments and equipment used in different clinical procedures, and describe their use and order of use during the procedure; - Explain the principles and methods of disinfection, sterilization and aseptic techniques as applied to specific instruments and equipment. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Explain how the clinical environment should be prepared with the necessary instruments and equipment in relation to the planned dental procedure; - Describe effective ways of providing chairside support in all clinical procedures with respect to the manipulation, handling and transfer/exchange of the relevant instruments and equipment; - Describe own and other team members' responsibilities in relation to avoiding hazards and taking precautions when handling various instruments and equipment; - Describe the care, maintenance, and safe disposable of instruments and equipment used in dentistry.
