DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will provide undergraduate students with theoretical tuition in the discipline of operative dentistry, as part of the expertise required for comprehensive patient care and oral rehabilitation. Study-Unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to give students the knowledge required to be competent in operative dentistry. Such knowledge will set a solid foundation for students to be able to progress in their pre-clinical practical training and eventually provide a high standard of evidence-based dental care to patients in clinical practice. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe the aetiology and classification of caries and tooth wear; - Discuss the importance of clinical examination and describe methods of diagnosing dental caries; - Discuss the principle of minimally invasive dentistry; - Explain the rationale for operative dentistry in caries control; - Describe the armamentarium required for the practice of operative dentistry; - Describe the principles of infection control as applied to operative dentistry; - Describe the principles involved in the restoration of carious teeth; - Explain the principles of maintenance of the restored dentition. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Diagnose caries and differentiate carious lesions of different size and severity; - Diagnose toothwear and recognize the various aetiologies of toothwear; - Justify preventive measures and/or operative intervention for carious teeth and teeth exhibiting signs of wear; - Select the most suitable caries removal approach, based on the location and extent of the carious lesion; - Apply the principles of minimally invasive dentistry to the clinical practice of operative dentistry; - Apply the principles of infection control to the clinical practice of operative dentistry. ADDITIONAL NOTES | Pre-requisite Study-unit: DNS1106 Co-requisite Study-units: RDN2101, RDN2103 A pass in this study-unit is required before registering for RDN3101 and RDN3108. Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below. |
