DESCRIPTION This study-unit will provide undergraduate students with preclinical practical training in the discipline of operative dentistry and well as training in the handling of biomaterials related to the practice of operative dentistry and removable prosthodontics.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to provide high quality preclinical training that will complement and consolidate the theoretical knowledge acquired by the students in the Operative Dentistry and Biomaterials study-units. Students will be provided with rigorous practical training that will ensure they are able to progress and safely provide a high standard of dental care to patients in their forthcoming clinical training.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Recall the properties of different biomaterials used in removable prosthodontics and operative dentistry;
- Identify the instruments and armamentarium necessary for carrying out various operative procedures;
- Identify the instruments and armamentarium necessary for mixing and placing various biomaterials used in removable prosthodontics and operative dentistry;
- Define procedures for different classes of tooth preparation and restoration;
- Define methods and techniques used in handling various dental biomaterials.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Confidently handle operative dentistry armamentarium;
- Mix and handle a range of biomaterials used in operative dentistry and removable prosthodontics;
- Carry out various basic operative procedures of acceptable standard on extracted teeth and dental mannequins;
- Follow routine infection control policies as applied to the practice of operative dentistry and the clinical handling of biomaterials.

ADDITIONAL NOTES In order for students to be awarded an overall pass in the study-unit, they need to satisfy the following conditions:
• obtain a pass mark in the Biomaterials Practical Component; and
• obtain an overall pass in the Operative Dentistry and Biomaterials Practical and Operative Dentistry Practical Components.

Pre-requisite Study-units: DNS1106 and DNS1101

Co-requisite Study-units: RDN2101, RDN2102 and DNS2100

A pass in this study-unit is required before registering for RDN3101, RDN3108 and RDN3110.

Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below.
