DESCRIPTION | This is a study-unit in Brazilian Portuguese directed at previous participants of Portuguese 1 and 2. It will provide a continuation of the learning acquired in the previous study-units. Each class will have a different theme and will address a specific grammatical aspect of the language. This study-unit will look at previous grammar aspects covered by Portuguese 1 and Portuguese 2, building the confidence of students in using these grammar constructions whilst also introducing new and more complex grammatical aspects. A focus of this study-unit will be on building confidence and accuracy in communicating with native speakers. Themes to cover will include more of a focus on Brazil and aspects of its culture including: superstitions, beliefs, festivals, leisure, cultural norms, etc. Grammar points to be reviewed are: The present, the past perfect, the imperfect, the simple future, conditional and Imperative of regular and irregular verbs. As a consolidation of unit 2: the present subjunctive, imperfect subjunctive, pluperfect subjunctive and future subjunctive will be looked at in more detail. The personal infinitive will be introduced: - Prepositions, pronouns, adjectives masculine and feminine, plural and comparisons, negatives, expressions, relative pronouns, indefinites. In this unit there will be a focus on expressing wishes and desires using subjunctive phrases in different tenses, expressing opinions, relating conversations or stories about others, passive voices, double negatives. The focus is on accuracy and building confidence in using grammar and vocabulary acquired during the units. Students should be able to use common idioms with ease and be confident in introducing more complicated grammatical phrasing into speech and writing. Students should be able to engage in conversations in themes familiar to them; read with confidence a variety of themes as well as draw from a wide range of grammatical structures and phrases to express themselves. Study-unit Aims: This unit aims to follow on from Portuguese 2. It aims to equip students with the skills, knowledge and vocabulary to be able to express themselves in conversation with native speakers using opinions, disagreeing and agreeing, expressing preferences etc. It aims to equip students with the ability to understand and recognise complex grammatical structures in written language as well as express themselves similarly in writing. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Comprehend more extended speech and follow conversations on themes related to Brazil. - Read and understand more lengthy texts such as news articles on Brazil. - Write clear more detailed text expressing a particular point of view. - Recognise and use a variety of different tenses in Portuguese including more complex structures such as subjunctive tenses. - Demonstrate knowledge of Brazilian culture including customs, beliefs, festivals etc. - Comprehend the main points of more complex texts regarding a variety of themes not necessarily those covered by the course using the language knowledge gained. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Write descriptive texts that express wishes, desires and opinions. - Describe experiences, events, hopes, ambitions and give reasons for these. - Communicate effectively with native speakers.
