DESCRIPTION | In this study-unit, students will complete a research dissertation in the area of Spanish and Latin American Studies. The specific areas of this dissertation will be Spanish and/or Latin American literature and linguistics including interdisciplinary research. Students will be able to conduct research for their dissertation on any topics, periods and authors of Spanish and/or Latin-American literatures. In the specific field of applied linguistics, students will be able to write their dissertations in the areas of sociolinguistics, pragmatics, translation and Spanish as a foreign language. Study-Unit Aims: - To provide students with specialised and advanced comprehension of Spanish and/or Latin American Studies. - To enable students to understand and define some of the more salient issues in contemporary Hispanic research. - To enable students to gain knowledge and an appreciation of critical theory and interdisciplinarity. - To enable students to develop a critical awareness of the Hispanic world and issues of cultural history. - To provide students with the skills required for independent learning and for developing the capacity to work both with others and autonomously. - To teach students how to gain the ability to engage in critical thinking/analysis. - To prepare students for progression to Ph.D. programmes. - To teach students how to gain the ability to engage in critical thinking/analysis. - To prepare students for progression to Ph.D. programmes. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Engage with complex critical issues in the subject area of Spanish and/or Latin American Studies, and particularly of specific periods in the histories of one or more Hispanic countries. - Undertake original research in the subject area of Spanish and Latin American Studies, leading to original contributions to the field. - Appraise and evaluate critically cultural questions in the Hispanic world and in Hispanic Studies. - Apply a range of theories, concepts and ideas to their research. - Appreciate, explain and discuss a range of aspects related to foreign cultures. - Plan and undertake independent research (developing specialised practices in order to identify research problems and to conduct original research). - Gather information, develop critical awareness, and evaluate that information critically. - Present arguments -- verbally and in writing -- that are well-written or articulated, clearly expressed, coherently organised, and properly supported with evidence. - Engage with complex scholarly questions and formulate independent hypothesis and theses about them. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Appraise problems in scholarly and other professional contexts, and conduct research to evaluate them. - Critique, explain and discuss complex theories. - Undertake exhaustive research using a range of sources. - Work independently to produce reports and analyses. - Work in intercultural settings. ADDITIONAL NOTES | **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners. | ||||||
