DESCRIPTION Objective:
An exploration on the policy process in doing a Social Impact Assessment based on practical examples and case studies to analyze planned interventions.

This study-unit explores what is it like to be a consultant doing Social Impact Assessment through hands-on workshop sessions, with a particular focus onapplying professional work ethics.

Content:
This study-unit builds on SOC 5023 by exploring the policy process from formulation to actualisation of doing Social Impact Assessment. Through workshop sessions with key stakeholders and consultants, students become familiar themselves with case studies of Social Impact Assessments. Students shall be able to apply their knowledge on policy process and formulate their report by focusing on a particular case. Throughout this process, students shall understand the role of being a consultant working within this field of research. Additionally, students are able to investigate the benefits and mitigate the negative impacts of a planned intervention by applying this knowledge in a case study.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Acquaint students with skills on how to take on the role of a consultant;
- Acquaint students with examples of Social Impact Assessment studies conducted locally;
- Acquaint students with hand-on experience on formulating reports;
- Acquaint students with presentation skills required when presenting the results to key stakeholders.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss on how the role of a consultant is central in formulating a social impact assessment;
- Explain the importance of good professional work ethics;
- Discuss exemplary practices of Social Impact Assessments locally;
- Explain the process by designing the framework of doing a social impact assessment.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Acquire a set of transferable skills for conducting consultancy work;
- Apply the course material to practice the formulation and actualization of an SIA report;
- Apply presentational skills when presenting the SIA report.
