- The Mathematics of Probability form Cardano to Laplace;
- From Annuities to Social Dynamics: the Rise of Statistics;
- The Mathematical Foundations of Statistics;
- Origins of Modern Statistics;
- Axiomatization of Probability;
- Induction, Statistical Law and Contemporary Philosophy of Probability;
- Potentially material for presentation.

Study-Unit Aims:

The main aims of this study-unit are to acquaint students with the historical development and the key controversies of Probability and Statistics, and to aid towards a better appreciation of the ideologies and methodologies that emerged over the centuries.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- discuss how the impact of probabilistic and statistical discourse changed over the centuries;
- name the key persons who led to the development of the foundations of Probability and Statistics;
- discuss about various controversies that arose in relation to probabilistic and statistical concepts and their applications during historical times.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- show an appreciation towards the accelerated growth and the widespread use that Statistics has experienced in the last century;
- identify the prominent figures who led to the establishment of Statistics as a reputable science in the last century;
- demonstrate a critical and enquiring approach to the development of the theoretical foundations of Probability and Statistics.
