Study-Unit Description

CODE SOR5263

TITLE Latent Variables: Measurement and Analysis

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 10

DEPARTMENT Statistics and Operations Research

DESCRIPTION Students taking this study-unit will be assigned a number of topics selected from the ones which follow according to the needs of the students:

- Reliability and Validity;
- Transferability and Generalizability;
- Item Response Theory;
- Latent Growth Curve Modeling.

Study-unit Aims:

This unit aims to reinforce the notion of a latent variable and to familiarize the students with different latent variable models, choosing the most appropriate model for the situation being considered and working with suitable software packages.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) understand the theory underlying latent variable models;
b) use the statistical techniques covered in this unit appropriately;
c) fit latent variable models to real life datasets.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) use latent variable models confidently and appropriately;
b) use software packages to fit various types of latent variable models.
