DESCRIPTION A study-unit in Brazilian Portuguese directed at beginners. Each class will have a different theme and a specific grammar aspect. The method used is the communicative approach but it will also include pertinent grammatical explanations.The focus is on accuracy as well as communication and communicating with native speakers in situations like knowing and meeting people, eating and drinking, at the hotel and in the city, home, everyday’s life, parts of the body, work, clothes and family.

The themes will be: meeting people, eating and drinking, at the hotel, home, everyday life, body, work, clothes and family. The grammar points to be reviewed are: The present, the past imperfect of regular and irregular verbs, the immediate future, the past future, present future and Imperative will be looked at during the study-unit as will prepositions, pronouns, masculine and feminine, plural and comparisons.

This study-unit is aimed primarily at equipping students with language skills but will also give information about Brazil and Brazilians. During the course of the classes the tutor will introduce information about specific aspects of Brazilian music, food, behavior, etc.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to equip students with basic reading, listening, speaking and writing skills in the Portuguese language in a dynamic and communicative way, though individual, pair and group work and study.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify short, simple messages and announcements in the Portuguese language (listening).
- Communicate in simple, routine situations in Portuguese (speaking).
- Write short texts regarding themes familiar to the student (family, hobbies etc) (writing).
- Understand short texts written in Portuguese and able to respond to questions on its content (reading).
- Understand and recognise basic grammatical structures of the (Brazilian) Portuguese language.
- Acquire a rudimentary knowledge of Brazilian society and culture.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Read short simple texts and find specific information in Portuguese or answer specific questions about the text.
- Write short texts, messages and personal letters in Portuguese.
- Communicate with other persons in Portuguese regarding topics familiar to them.
- Work together comfortably in a group or in pairs to undertake short assignments.

The main material will be prepared by the lecturer and will be distributed to the students at the beginning of the study-unit.
