DESCRIPTION | This is a seminar study-unit. The student, in the course of his/her studies when joining the MSc by Research programme, reads and digests the available literature in the relevant area of research, starts the research work according to the approved proposal as per the relevant guidelines and prepares a presentation of about 30 minutes on the subject. This presentation is then delivered by the student in the form of a seminar, during which he/she will answer questions fielded by the Panel of Supervision and the rest of the audience. The audience consists of the members of the academic staff, students of the department and others invited guests. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to assist students in: 1. Obtaining a critical understanding of the theoretical perspectives in their chosen research area; 2. Demonstrating a critical understanding of work already done in the area of study; 3. Obtaining a critical understanding of the methods used in research; 4. Demonstrating of the planned research methods and course of research. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. Identify a research problem which he/she wishes to explore; 2. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the theoretical perspectives in their chosen area of study; 3. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the methods used in research. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. Analyse and evaluate information that is relevant to the research problem; 2. Report and discuss the results of their research in a clear, structured and concise form; 3. Evaluate the strengths and limitations of their research and propose possible further studies; 4. Gain confidence in the preparation of scientific presentations and their delivery. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: As suggested by Dissertation Supervisor/Advisor, as necessary for particular research project and as deemed necessary by student. |
