DESCRIPTION This study-unit comprises detailed understanding of enteral and parenteral nutrition of the surgical patient, general principles of anaesthesia, complications of anaesthesia, and the application of local anaesthetic techniques. It deals with pain physiology and pain management together with the main principles of infection control.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to give participants the knowledge for preparing, assessing and treating the patient in the surgical ward and in the operating theatre.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Describe the principles of infection control in the operating theatre, CSSD and ward;
- Discuss the measures to prevent infection in surgical procedures involving prostheses and to prevent infection in surgical wounds;
- Describe the main principles and applications of patient nutrition, and its application in enteral or parenteral routes in surgical patients before or after their surgery, and in acutely ill situations;
- Discuss pain physiology, its management by pharmacological means and other techniques such as injection techniques; and
- Describe the latest concepts in the use of anaesthetic agents, contra indications to anaesthesia and complications of anaesthesia

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Assess cardiovascular and respiratory status of the critically ill patient;
- Assess and correct electrolyte and acid/base disorders;
- Apply infection control procedures in the operating theatre and on surgical wards; and
- Understand the surgical treatment principles of patients with polytrauma.
