DESCRIPTION The dissertation of 60 ECTS constitutes two thirds of the new Master of Surgery (MCh) Course which is mainly by Research. The dissertatiion will commence in the first semester of the second year and will end in the second semester of the third year of the course when students will be expected to submit the dissertation.

Study-unit Aims:

The dissertation aims to enable the students to apply the knowledge on Research Methods, Ethics, Medical Statistics, Pathology and Applied Physiology.

Students will be assigned a supervisor who will guide and monitor the academic progress during the different phases, from the formulation of a research question, to the drafting of the proposal, research and the development and subsequent submission of the dissertation.

This research study might be an impetus that encourages students to further their studies in one of the specialized fields of Surgery.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Assess a number of research questions;
- Discuss with the supervisor the preferred research area and the main focus of the study;
- Assess what qualitative and/or qualitative studies should be made to achieve the best results for the research; and
- Describe the topic.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Apply different methods of research;
- Critically analyse the data;
- Develop arguments that challenge the research question;
- Focus on a particular area of study within a wider perspective;
- Prepare an academic writing;
- Identify methods of description which best illustrate the research findings;
- Establish conclusions; and
- Identify possible questions for further research.

ADDITIONAL NOTES **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.
