DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will involve students getting introduced to laparoscopic anatomy through performing sham laparoscopies on Thiel embalmed cadavers and also using open dissection of these cadavers to understand the internal organs of the abdomen and the chest. Laparoscopic trainers will also be used to train the students in virtual reality settings. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to provide students with the basic anatomical knowledge in the principles and practice of laparoscopic surgery through the use of cadaveric specimens and surgical simulators. This study-unit aims to give students basic practical knowledge through the use of instruments and techniques in two types of model situations. These are: a. model situation using cadavers; and b. model situations in a computerized setting. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - describe the instruments required for laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgery; - explain the uses of laparoscopy and thoracoscopy as a diagnostic procedure; - explain the uses of laparoscopy and thoracoscopy as treatment resource; - identify landmarks in surface anatomy on the cadaver with respect to laparoscopic and thoracoscopic techniques; - indicate the suggested landmarks for portholes for laparoscopic and thoracoscopic instruments; - have an appreciation of surgical anatomy in relation to laparoscopy to be demonstrated on the Thiel cadavers; and - appreciate potential problems in laparoscopic surgery. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - use the equipment for laparoscopy and thoracoscopy; - use laparoscopy and thoracoscopy as a diagnostic procedure;- use laparoscopy and thoracoscopy as a treatment; - perform basic trocar insertions for different operations; - perform surgical techniques used for different operations; and - prevent potential problems of laparocopic and thoracoscopic surgery.
