| DESCRIPTION | Methods in Social Work 1 provides social work students with a foundation in terms of social work theory. It is a core study-unit which social work students follow early on in their degree course and the material covered in this study-unit forms the basis for further theoretical knowledge which they will be exposed to throughout their course. The students are exposed to basic social work terminology through the content which is covered. The content covered includes: - historical development and perspectives; - values and codes of ethics; - consideration of various perspectives on social work practice; - the social work process; - the worker; - the client. Study-Unit Aims: - Provide students with an initial understanding of what social work is about, encouraging them to reflect on what it means to be a social worker; - Encourage students to view social work from different perspectives; - Present the different facets of social work as well as the values and processes involved when one practises social work; - Make students aware of the different client groups who social workers work with. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - describe issues related to the nature of social work practice; - explain the distinguishing features of social work as a distinct profession; - explain the basic theoretical concepts which underpin the social work profession; - describe the different perspectives through which one can view social work practice; - discuss the processes involved when one practises social work; - talk about the different client groups who social workers work with; - explain what the values which guide the social work profession consist of; - apply the theoretical foundation presented in this study unit in other study units presented throughout the course; - analyze the complexity and richness involved in social work as a discipline. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - interpret social work as a profession distinct from other caring professions; - apply social work theoretical concepts to case scenarios presented; - apply learning of methods to different client groups through role play; - employ social work values as applied to case studies.
