DESCRIPTION Students reading for an MA in Social Care Management are required to write a 12,000 to 15,000 word project report which will focus on key organisational, management and leadership issues pertaining to a social care context.

Study-Unit Aims:

The main aim of the Project is to give students the opportunity to focus on a selected area of interest and develop a project around that area which applies the knowledge and skills gained in the course. The Project challenges the students to demonstrate their ability to apply their knowledge to real life situations which are encountered in the management of social care services. The Project also affords students the opportunity for an independent exercise under the guidance and supervision of an academic supervisor.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- demonstrate knowledge and articulate various themes related to managing social care organisations;
- consolidate knowledge, skills and abilities learnt in other study units by being able to undertake further fieldwork and desk-top research;
- critically review relevant theoretical and conceptual frameworks;
- apply scientific researching designs and techniques while respecting the ethical standards of research;
- write systematic research reports with the aim of contributing towards policy innovation, managerial reengineering and better governance.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- identify, select and prioritize valued projects in their sectors;
- manage time, resources and effort to conclude time-bound projects;
- strengthen and enrich their personal skills portfolio;
- conduct fieldwork research, marshal evidence and produce scientific-based reporting;
- integrate the theoretical and empirical features of the course of studies to formulate holistic studies and execute projects;
- contribute towards the practice of evidence-based management and policy; and
- critically evaluate their own work.
