DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will focus on organisational leadership, which may be defined as a management approach in which leaders help set strategic goals for the organisation while motivating individuals within the group to successfully carry out assignments in service to those goals. The study-unit will look at what distinguishes an organisational leader from a functional manager or an executive with other leadership qualities. Study-Unit Aims: The aims of this study-unit are: - To familiarise students with the historical development of leadership theories; - To develop within students an understanding of the difference between functional management roles and leadership roles within social care organisations; - To familiarise students with the concept of Transformational Leadership; - To familiarise students with the capabilities of Emotionally Intelligent Leadership. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - define transformational leadership; - explain emotional intelligence; - describe the components of emotional intelligence; - explain the influence that vision has in effective leadership; - describe the different leadership theories relevant to working in health and social care; - explain how their leadership style meets the needs of different situations. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - assess their own leadership style and identify their own strengths and weaknesses; - apply the capabilities of emotional intelligence to transformational leadership, thus enhancing organizational satisfaction, commitment and effectiveness; - discern among organisational leadership traits, skills and behaviour, including idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual simulation and individualized consideration; - achieve balance among three overlapping goals of leadership, namely task achievement, team dynamics and individual development.
