DESCRIPTION This study-unit will focus on addressing transversal themes that are central to social work practice. These will include Loss, Resilience, Spirituality, Emotional Intelligence, Assessment, Risk Assessment, Abuse, Neglect and Safeguarding, Case Management, Ethical Issues, Leadership, Culturally Sensitive Practice, Supervision, Social Media/ICT, Evidence Informed Practice, Reflective Practice and Practice-Based Research. Students will also be encouraged to propose themes which are of interest to them and which they intend exploring in their dissertation.

Study-Unit Aims:

1. To provide students with the opportunity to learn and critically reflect about a number of transversal themes that cut across social work practice;
2. To give students the opportunity to discuss key themes with seasoned practitioners who are experts in particular fields;
3. To stimulate background reading about the themes under consideration and to encourage further debate and study about some of these key themes.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Explain the key notions that pertain to the various themes that would have been considered during the study-unit;
2. Critically analyse how these core themes contribute to effective social work practice;
3. Report the views of seasoned practitioners about the key themes.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate the ability to engage in a critical analysis of the themes considered;
2. Demonstrate the ability to debate issues that arise in practice drawing both on the practitioners' contribution and their own practice experiences;
3. Analyse their application of knowledge of some of the key themes in their practice.
