DESCRIPTION This study-unit serves as an introduction for student teachers to delve into the rationale and practices of Retail as well as empowering them with a critical mentality. This study-unit also aims to expose student teachers to a variety of teaching approaches and to assess the appropriateness of particular approaches with respect to Retail.

This study-unit further equips student teachers to creatively teach Retail. A stimulating and collaborative teaching approach towards the teaching of the subject is discussed, especially as regards the needed pedagogical content knowledge.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to:
- introduce and immerse student-teachers into a creative and stimulating approach towards the preparation and teaching of aspects of Retail, including the use of collaborative learning techniques;
- propose and generate ideas on how to teach different facets of Retail including skills, attitudes and content through interaction and discussion;
- sensitize student-teachers to prepare differentiated lessons; and
- help them to reflect on the criteria that determine the success of lessons in Retail.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- describe the content of the main areas of knowledge pertinent to Retail;
- demonstrate knowledge of collaborative learning theory and how this can be applied to the Retail topics under consideration;
- with the help of examples, discuss strategies for differentiated learning; and
- explain how relevant organisations can bring in value-added to learning experiences.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- plan stimulating learning scenarios to cover the main areas of study in Retail which take into consideration the diverse needs of learners in a co-educational and mixed-ability setting;
- come up with and design a variety of resources to make lessons stimulating; and
- critically appraise the content of Retail.
