DESCRIPTION | Vocational education in Maltese secondary schools aims to prepare students with the key competences in preparation for further education and the acquisition of theoretical and practical skills. In this respect, this study-unit is designed to equip learners with the necessary skills and knowledge to teach Applied Retail. It discusses the procedures related to the application of retail tasks and enhances the students’ knowledge development and practical skills relating to Retail. Pedagogical implications are also discussed. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to immerse students into the key aspects of retail, so that they can teach this subject in secondary schools. By being enriched with the underpinning knowledge related to retail, students are then able to critically apply knowledge and skills in a retail environment. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Discuss the facts and procedures in the application of retail tasks and instructions; - Demonstrate the importance of adequate storage of goods, practical merchandising and satisfactory customer service; - Describe how relevant organisations can bring in value-added to learning experiences and potential entrepreneurial endeavours; and - Recognise initiatives which present opportunities for teaching and learning Retail. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Acquire and utilise key retail competences; - Critically appraise the basic content of Retail; - Evaluate and interpret facts in Retail; - Acquire and apply relevant and ethical retail knowledge and skills to pursue specific courses of action; and - Appraise the role of entrepreneurship within the retail industry.
