DESCRIPTION | The study-unit will train theatre students to fulfil the main tasks involved in theatre-making, bringing together skills catered for in other parts of the programme (such as acting, directing, devising, writing, lighting and sound, and arts management) in the context of a professional setup. These tasks will include i. either creating a theatre company with the aim of performing to paying audiences or designing a project of relevance within the performing arts sector and ii. managing the setup of the specific project they choose to work on, including financing, programming, marketing, and accounting. Attention will also be given to legal requirements, competing for funds, and maintaining good public relations. Skills will be transmitted via lectures, tutorials, and seminars in a classroom environment and practical sessions related to the nature and requirements of their project. The students will be mentored by experienced academics/practitioners throughout the whole academic year to learn how to take responsibility and ownership of their own work. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit has the aim of preparing B.Theatre (Hons.) students for the rigours of professional theatre-making, with reference to the Maltese and the broader international scenarios. On completion of this study-unit, students will be familiar with important aspects of professional theatre, and able to participate confidently in the sector. They will be aware of requirements from them as artists who give a service to the public, including issues of status, taxation, copyright, and classification of performances. Students will also be able to compete for available funds and sponsorships, and manage funds properly. They will also be able to find and select other important resources such as venues and match their product to the market by establishing appropriate niches, seeking out audiences, timing performances correctly, etc. The study-unit will also prepare students to deal with difficulties that may be encountered within the sector, not only on a financial level but also in relation to the physical and mental well-being of the individual, their peers, and other people they may be responsible for.
