DESCRIPTION | The dissertation study-unit provides each registered student with an opportunity to identify and investigate a research topic within theatre studies, considered by the board of studies of Theatre Studies to be a suitable area of research that falls within the expertise of an allocated supervisor. The dissertation enables students to expand on the themes explored during the taught components of the course, document, and/or critically assess performances and use documentation, as well as academic literature to write a dissertation in accordance with the department's guidelines. Although the nature of this study-unit emphasises the importance of independent learning, regular encounters with the supervisor are also a necessary component so that students can be guided to produce a work of academic writing that is of a standard expected at postgraduate level. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit aims to: (a) provide the student with the opportunity to develop and pursue in depth a specific topic; (b) test the student's ability to undertake guided research in a chosen (and approved) area of study within theatre studies; (c) give the student the opportunity to show originality and research potential in a particular field of study related to theatre and performance. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: (a) demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the chosen topic and of the broader field of contemporary theatre and performance; (b) apply a wide range of theoretical and critical approaches to the subject / theme under investigation; (c) apply a variety of research techniques to the topic being researched; (d) formally articulate in writing the research results in a coherent and systematic fashion. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: (a) exercise initiative, take personal responsibility and discipline to define, set up, support, manage and realise a project or target over an extended period of time within specified resource allocations as well as solve problems encountered while undertaking a substantial project of work; (b) frame, articulate, and communicate in sophisticated and coherent writing the evidence base, debate and argument of the research undertaken; (c) deal positively with faculty and peer feedback and constructive criticism; (d) make decisions and devise appropriate strategies, informed by sound and creative problem-solving skills. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: The aim of the dissertation is to give student the opportunity to conduct individualised research under the supervision of a specialist in the field. The readings will therefore be determined by the subject or theme under investigation and a different reading list will be provided for each student. |
