| DESCRIPTION | The study-unit will consist of the following topics: - Introduction and definition of the key concepts in the field of Terminology as established by the International Standards Organization; - Terminology theory; - Principles of terminological practice; - Design and creation of terminological data collections in paper and electronic form; - Term extraction from text corpora; - Students shall be required to obtain a thorough knowledge of terminological principles and vocabulary as established in ISO 704 (2009) and ISO 1087-1 (2000). They shall also be expected to further their knowledge by reading other academic research in the field. Study-unit Aims: The aims of the study-unit are: - To provide students with the knowledge of the fundamental principles of Terminology and its various theoretical and methodological approaches; - To give students the ability to apply internationally-established methodological approaches to terminology research; - To provide students with the ability to design and create reliable terminological data collections (TDCs) to be used by translators. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Produce a terminology data collection (TDC), both in book and digital form, according to internationally-established standards; - Select and use the most appropriate and reliable terminological resources for translation purposes; - Evaluate other TDCs to determine their reliability for translators. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Students will have the ability to compile TDCs which will be sufficiently reliable for use by translators; - Students would have the competencies required to work as terminologists in Terminology Units such as those of the European Union and other international institutions; - They will also be able to critically analyze other new or existing TDCs and evaluate their reliability based on established methodological principles.
