DESCRIPTION This study-unit aims to introduce the students to the principles of strategic management and their application to the tourism, heritage, hospitality and events (THHE) sectors. In the first part students will explore the generic concepts of strategy but will learn how to apply them to the industry which is primarily service oriented, using an integrated approach as well as a single sector approach. In the latter part of the course, students will then focus on strategic analysis, strategic choices and the implementation. Case Studies will form part of the resources used, with a final seminar for students to have the opportunity to present their 'personal' case study to an audience.

Study-Unit Aims:

The unit aims to give the students an awareness about key issues facing THEE organisations and will provide concepts, frameworks and tools to plan for the future organisations and industry which is continuously evolving.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- demonstrate a general knowledge framework and understanding of the environment in which the industry operates;
- use this knowledge to critically evaluate and analyse concepts, theories and decision-making tools for strategic management in tourism;
- develop a balanced knowledge and understanding of the latest thinking and ideas in the tourism industry.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- analyse the internal and external operating environment apply sustainable principles to the assessment or development of a strategic direction;
- prepare a plan for executing the strategy.
