DESCRIPTION The following themes will be analysed during the study-unit:

The development of tourism in Malta from the Early “imperial” and business travellers to the present day. The unit is designed to provide a specific focus on Malta’s Tourism Development in the post-war era. and to examine in it the light of social sciences theory, more specifically to development theory.

Study-unit Aims:

Its aim is:

-To provide a framework for the changes which took place throughout this period
-To develop the appropriate knowledge to permit students to analyse the impacts that these changes had on Maltese Society
-To explore the concepts relating to the interconnected disciplines of tourism studies and development studies.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

-Illustrate the relationship between the social sciences, politics and economics
-Outline the key theoretical perspectives of development and
-Apply them to the Maltese context
-Critically analyse tourism's role in development

-Writing and Expression of ideas
