DESCRIPTION | This study-unit gives the student an overview of the main issues affecting tourism and heritage during the 21st Century. Student will be able to analyse the current trends and how factors such as politics, economic and environmental issues are affecting global tourism activity. Study-unit Aims The aim of this unit is to familiarise the students with the topical issues in tourism and heritage areas and to encourage their analytical skills in developing effective decision making. Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Argue the dynamics of tourism; - Discuss with conviction and using appropriate examples the prevalent issues in tourism; - Appreciate that tourism is a dynamic industry and be able to adopt a flexible approach. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Evaluate critically particular situations and also provide suggestions for the most appropriate course of action; - Refine their presentation skills; - Present own arguments with assertiveness. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings Note: The texts used for this study-unit are assigned by the tutors at the beginning of the study-unit. Since the actual content depends on the themes to be discussed during the term, the papers and case studies assigned reflect the topics chosen for that particular year. The general areas to the covered will always be based in the four main areas of the degree programme namely, environment, heritage, hospitality, social impacts, management and marketing. Assigned readings will be taken from the following Journals: - Annals of Tourism Research (Available) - Journal of Sustainable Tourism (Available) - Journal of Vacation Marketing (Available) - Journal of Mediterranean Studies (Available) - Tourism Management - Research, Policies and Practices (Available) - Journal of Environment Planning and Management (Available) - Internaltional Journal of Heritage Studies (To be acquired). |
