DESCRIPTION The symbiosis between tourism and culture is today situated at a confluence as these once independent streams are today interdependent.

This study-unit enables students to develop knowledge and awareness of the demands of these two sectors. Students will explore how effective managerial leadership can successfully manage tourism and culture organisations.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to show students how to equip themselves with basic skills to fulfil the managerial leader role, explore the changing nature of organisations, as well as assess what this change means to the leadership role.

The objectives are to:
- Use contemporary concepts and theories for managerial roles;
- Identify areas for development for the future manager;
- Explore how organisational structures can change to address the needs of customers and stakeholders;
- Evaluate team and organisational culture.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Recognise the difference between leadership and management;
- Identify alternative leadership styles and qualities;
- Judge when and how to apply a particular leadership style in the workplace;
- Assess the effects of differing leadership styles on group activities;
- Recognise own preferred leadership style;
- Assess methods of how to develop trust within the team;
- Examine methods that allow effective planning and execution of organisational change.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify a range of leadership styles - their use and potential impacts on individuals and outputs;
- Identify leadership qualities and the sources of power;
- Identify, develop and apply the most appropriate use of personal leadership styles;
- Review the change process and plan for it.
