DESCRIPTION | This study-unit provides an overview of the contemporary issues related to sustainable tourism. The concept of sustainable tourism has now developed dedicated theoretical literature and it is being applied worldwide. Effectively managing the economic, planning, environmental and social aspects is imperative when promoting sustainable tourism development. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to develop a critical understanding of the concept of sustainable development. Students are provided with a broad understanding of environmental issues and their impact upon the tourism industry, therefore subject areas such as pollution, waste management and biodiversity will be a primary focus. Different interpretations of sustainable tourism are analysed. It will seek to engage the student with the subject by describing and critically analysing the extent to which sustainability- related considerations are being pursued within the global tourism sector. The natural and cultural environments of communities and global destinations will be explored to enable students to critically interpret tourism dependency, and the changes and development of domestic and international tourism policy. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Analyse the debate on the acceptance of sustainable tourism, exploring barriers and potential solutions; - Explain the difference in sustainable and eco-tourism determining the role of eco in sustainable tourism and critically evaluate the impact this has had on the events industry; - Describe the stakeholders and their influence on tourism development; - Report and critique sustainable tourism among the different geographical areas; - Identify existing destination assets of a destination and determine its competitive advantage; - Identify and report on sustainable trends within major hospitality/tourism-based companies; - Analyse methods to reduce the negative impact to the environment of a host destination due to tourism development; - Apply sustainable principles to the different sectors of tourism. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Critically assess and evaluate existing research results in the field; - Address a given environmental/sustainability/rural development issue within a group; - Formulate appropriate research questions that need to be answered; - Report knowledge, economic analysis, methods, and scientific research results related to sustainable tourism and rural development issues; - Analyse economic theory and empirical research, to interpret and to properly frame a research question and to do an appropriate literature review.
