DESCRIPTION | This unit provides a comprehensive grounding in the understanding and appreciation of contemporary culture and its practices in relation to the society within which it is expressed as well as in relation to tourism. The sessions will seek to link genres and their respective methodologies, based on an exploration of different models and strategies. The links between the arts and tourism will be studied as the means to audience development and the sustainability of cultural practices, through a critical understanding of events and festivals. Students will also be presented with the practical aspects of relating cultural projects to respective considerations of management, human resources and financial considerations as well as ethical issues specific to marketing and communication strategies, including considerations relating to tourism. The unit will also include focused studies of national and international cultural events relating to the various genres of the visual arts, theatre, carnival, literary festivals, dance, musical performance, etc. These sessions will also present an overview of former and current practices in the respective genre, showing the historical as well as contemporary perspective on cultural policies and planning, artistic direction, the role of various artistic and cultural practitioners, including the involvement of communities in the arts. Study-unit Aims: Arts, Culture and Events form an integral part of the tourism product. Students will be exposed to the various forms of cultural expression so as to understand better the relation between the arts and tourism. This study unit aims to present various cultural policies and practices that bring together the arts and tourism. While exploring different forms of cultural expression, students become acquainted with the demands and requirements of planning and holding and the interplay of various stakeholders involved in the Arts, Culture and events sector. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • Assess the theories underpinning cultural programme planning, ethics and artistic direction; • Evaluate the mechanisms behind cultural programmes relating to logistics, performance spaces as well as marketing and financing; • Examine different forms of cultural expression (the visual arts, the performing arts and interactive installations) as potential tourism products. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • Examine the merits of a successful cultural activity in terms of the various stages in which the work is planned and implemented; • Appraise and evaluate the qualities of a cultural programme or festival.
