Study-Unit Description

CODE TTC2124

TITLE Data Gathering and Analysis 1

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Tourism Management

DESCRIPTION This study-unit focuses on data acquisition and analysis for deductive (exploratory) studies. Students acquire the necessary tools to understand the value of carrying out deductive studies in order to be able to conduct hypothesis/es testing.

It takes the student through the research journey from setting the correct deductive research question and its respective hypothesis/es, to the development of the research model with the respective variables and their causality. In addition this study unit then focuses on quantitative methods of data gathering focusing around different types of questionnaire designs and their respective implementation. It also gives the student a critical understanding of descriptive data analysis and basic inferential data analysis for hypothesis testing.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to develop the concept of data gathering, analysis and modelling using quantitative methods of research. This study unit encourages students to further explore the fundamentals of data gathering and analysis. In order for students to understand the concepts of data gathering and analysis in tourism studies, students are provided with insights into the elements of research design and planning that leads up to the data collection process. Through practical learning, effective data collection, analyses and interpretation of data, students will be able to develop a better decision-making process, based on acquired data and trend analysis. The content will enable them to better understand the meaning of data and the insights that it reveals.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Appraise proper deductive questions and draw effective hypothesis/es which could be subjected to further testing;
- Examine a deductive research model by employing different variables into the equation and also represent their causality;
- Justify a proper survey using the different tools and techniques and/or learn how to adopt other models which have already been used and thus have already presented good levels of validity and reliability;
- Write a descriptive analysis of data;
- Assess any hypothesis using different basic statistical tools;
- Organize and report the results.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explore a good research model taking into account the different variables (independent, dependent, moderating and mediating) and their respective causality;
- Research a tourism related area using applicable quantitative methods, depending on the research study (defined by the research objectives and the research questions);
- Compose a descriptive analysis of data;
- Evaluate hypothesis testing using basic statistics;
- Write conclusions on results and present data in a complete study.
