DESCRIPTION | The study tour is intended to provide a first hand opportunity for the student to apply theoretical knowledge and understanding to various aspects of tourism destination management which is an essential component of the Tourism Studies course. It is organized with specific aspects pertinent to destination management according to the place the group will visit. The study tour will be introduced through a series of preparatory lectures. Following the study tour, another set of lectures will follow to consolidate student learning. Students are strongly encouraged to register for at least one study tour during the duration of the course. Study-unit Aims: - To provide an opportunity for experience-based learning as an alternative methodology to further enhance knowledge, understanding and skills essential for students aspiring for a career in tourism. - Through observation, students could understand current opportunities and challenges while instilling values towards the promotion of sustainable forms of tourism. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Assess essential elements of various tourism destinations through on-site evaluation; - Examine and discuss the various aspects of tourism destination management experienced during the study tour; - Evaluate and conceptualize key complexities of tourism management at the destination level; - Examine the diverse interests within and between different tourism stakeholder groups involved in particular destinations; - Inspect negative impacts of tourism and design positive impacts on a destination’s environment, economy, and socio-cultural fabric; - Design effective field-based research, collating accurate data for report writing. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Apply scientific terminology to on-site situations; - Defend informed opinions about some of the leading opportunities and challenges associated with aspects of tourism destination management; - Apply learned knowledge to the case-studies explored during the study tour; - Assess through a critical thinking mindset when adopting an etic approach to data collection; - Analyse information from the study tour experience and draw comparisons with more familiar environments; - Compose information and communicate it through an organized and structured manner.
