DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides the necessary exposure for the student to experience the industry at first-hand. This direct learning experience allows for the knowledge, skills and competencies attained by the student during the period of study to be applied at the workplace.

Students will be assigned a place of work of their choice, where they will carry out their placement hours. A mentor will be appointed for each student; to assist the student in developing practical skills in the areas of tourism, culture and heritage.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of the study-unit is to orient the student to the world of work and to equip the student with useful transferable skills. In addition, students will be involved in worthwhile projects that will enrich their CV and consequently become more employable.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Appraise the dynamics of a work environment;
- Evaluate the ways in which tourism, heritage and cultural organizations work and operate;
- Identify enabling solutions to carry out administrative work related to tourism and culture;
- Conduct supervised work through which the student will be introduced to the world of work;
- Apply concepts and principles covered during the period of study to the exigencies of the placement.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Establish good communication and presentation skills;
- Relate well with subordinates, co-workers and superiors;
- Manage own life-skills, in particular develop important life-skills such as assertiveness, taking responsibility for own actions and working in groups together with people from different walks of life.
