DESCRIPTION | This study-unit aims to provide the student with an understanding of the basic concepts of entrepreneurship as it applies to cultural heritage within the tourism setting. The study-unit is also designed to encourage the development of entrepreneurial skills and cultural leadership. Lack of which, often in combination with a shortage of innovative thinking, inability to look outside the curatorial role, and doing things differently, puts a strain on the sustainability of cultural heritage institutions. Study-Unit Aims: The purpose of the study-unit is to make the students familiar with the concept of entrepreneurship competence and initiative in the fields of cultural heritage and tourism for their cultural heritage institution to remain relvant. Sustainable entrepreneurship in cultural heritage and tourism are key factors for reaching (future) audiences, improvement of visitors’ experience, cultural heritage valorisation and communication. Finally, providing an acquaintance with sustainable earning models, entrepreneurship is responsible for the sustainability and preservation of collections of a cultural heritage institution. This requires basic skills of research, strategical planning, project management and digitisation to meet the needs of present and future audiences. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Define the concept of cultural heritage and its different types (museums, archives, performances, exhibitions, libraries, artefacts, memory, relationship with place etc.). - Define the concept of enterprise and explore tourism enterprise developments locally and online. - Analyse the importance of finance (and where to obtain funding), access to technology, markets/audience development and entrepreneurial culture. - Explain the different platforms of digitization and their application in cultural heritage, including augmented/virtual reality paths and post-experience enhanced through social media, while acknowledging that technology and culture increasingly become intertwined. - Explain the vision and the mission of a cultural heritage institution in view of entrepreneurship in order to maintain tourist levels, improve audience interaction and access to cultural heritage in order to save and make the cultural product widely available. - Evaluate the need of entrepreneurial culture and transferable skills in communicating the validity of cultural heritage as digital platforms are tools for sharing content, collections and learning opportunities with physical and virtual communities and stakeholders. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Apply the five basic components of project management: clarity of vision, coordination, common sense, creativity and communication. - Devise a roadmap for strategic planning for a cultural heritage institution. - Appraise clear measurable key performance indicators. - Review the audience development of a cultural heritage institute and identify new audiences and how to attract and retain their interests. - Illustrate the benefits for cultural heritage institutions by implementing effective data collecting practices for better-informed decision-making processes. - Critique entrepreneurship: ethical and sustainably profits; improving the management, services and products; attending more effectively to the needs of the audiences.
