DESCRIPTION | Heritage interpretation allows for individuals involved in cultural and heritage to communicate significant ideas about a place to the public. It focuses specifically on generating cognitive and emotional links between visitors and what they can discover at a nature reserve, a historic site or a museum. Heritage Interpretation techniques reveal deeper meanings, relationships and insights by first-hand experience and by illustrative media, rather than by simple communication of factual information. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit will present the students with practical heritage interpretation tools and situations which are essential for interpreters in their work in the cultural sector. Heritage interpretation allows for students to explore effective communication principles depending on the audience. This study unit aims to kindle a sense of awareness about good practices within a field that is gaining increasing importance in tourism and heritage studies. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will: - Differentiate between guiding and interpretation; - Apply effective strategies in the field of heritage interpretation; - Evaluate examples of good practice in the sector of cultural/environmental heritage; - Evaluate different roles of heritage interpretation, from art exhibitions to museum settings; - Examine the inclusive role of heritage interpretation as a form of non-formal learning. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the skills emphasised are: - Apply good practice in interpretation and management in the cultural sector; - Plan interpretation and educational material related to cultural and environmental heritage.
