DESCRIPTION The study-unit sets out to offer students an opportunity to study different aspects of transport (policy, planning, operation and management) as well as other areas of economic and social activity in general as they relate to transport. Topics include:
- The principles and practice of transport policy and planning;
- Theory and practice of transport project appraisal and evaluation;
- Theory and use of statistical and modelling methods for analysing travel patterns and a range of transport options;
- Critical appraisal of a range of transport policies for the promotion of sustainable transport at national, regional and local levels;
- Design of transport policies at the national and local level that respond to the economic, social, and environmental challenges of the society.

Relevant philosophies, concepts, ideas, and policy cases are introduced including Principles of Transport Economics, Sustainable Transport and Transport and Tourism. As part of their coursework, students formulate a set of transport policies in a national, regional or city/town context on the basis of the theories and principles learnt from other study-units.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to develop in students the capability to make an effective contribution at the highest level to the policy making, planning and management of transport as the bridge between demand for and supply of products and services.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Appreciate the critical role of transport as the bridge between demand for and supply of goods and service;
- Comprehend the practical implementation of a policy and a plan and the relevance of planning for the sake of sustainable development;
- Recognize the important role of different modes of transport;
- Apply force field analysis and Porter's strategic analysis tools such as PEST-EL.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will have the skills for:
- Assessment of policy and projects;
- Policy and planning formulation;
- Elementary GIS;
- Understanding and using transport models;
- Understanding and using simulation models;
- Professional presentation skills (written and verbal);
- Project management with live projects;
- Design and evaluate policy drafting, roll out and implementation together with setting up of KPI monitoring systems such as the Balanced Scorecard.
