DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will provide an overview of the main themes and issues within the cultural and heritage tourism sectors. This unit will present the development and realities of tourism in a multi-cultural dimension. The unit puts forward an appreciation of the current developments in the industry, the prevalent thoughts and ideas and the ways how cultural heritage tourism has developed and spread all over the globe. A look at the Maltese situation will also be included. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this unit is to familiarise the students with the current trends in tourism with regard to the niche market which focusses on the cultural and heritage product. Students should be able to comprehend the main issues governing this theme, how it is developing, and the pressures it is exerting on local environments such as heritage sites and cultural manifestations and the effects it is leaving on indigenous cultures. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Have an in-depth knowledge of the various aspects connected to cultural tourism; - Identify the main elements of this niche industry; - Compare the pros and cons of the presentation of this tourism sector; - Relate the realities identified to the local / regional situation and be able to develop ways in which this tourism segment can be further developed to render a profit while remaining sustainable. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify literature based (internet and printed) research on this and related tourism themes; - Tackle the arguments raised in a rational and balanced manner; - Look into the positive and negative elements generated by tourism proposals connected with cultural aspects.
