DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will give the student the opportunity to conduct an independent study on a selected theme of research which is proposed by the student and approved by the Board of Studies. For this Unit the student will be assigned to an organisation within the cultural, heritage and tourism ambits which is disposed to host the student for the duration of the placement. The student will draw up a proposal for a project (of particular interest to the organisation to which s/he is assigned) that will be conducted during the period of placement. A mentor from the organisation (who is also approved by the BOS) will supervise the work and liaise with the coordinators at University. At the end of this study-unit, the student will submit the project to the coordinators who, together with the mentor, will evaluate it. Following the final evaluation a seminar will be held where all the projects conducted during the year will be presented. Study-unit Aims: The aims of the study-unit is to encourage the creation of independent research and introduce the student to on-site and hands-on experience. It will also encourage critical evaluation and assessment of specific heritage/cultural related situations and their contribution to the tourism industry. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Assess a situation in a real-world context; - Determine the best research and analytical tools to use; - Critically evaluate the results; - Present these results in a coherent manner. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Provide solutions to a given research problem; - Manage an individual project within a set time-frame, hence learn time and resource management skills; - Create independent applied research projects; - Present results to an audience and in this way learn how to transfer academic knowledge to others through the presentation of knowledge useful to the sector. |
