DESCRIPTION International Tourism is made up of interlinked series of undertakings provided by the industry, governments, local communities and other stakeholders. It differs in scope and volume from local tourism and is much more subject to planning and policy-making. Since international tourism is not one product but an amalgamate of many, successful and sustainable performances are depending on integrated planning, supply, accessibility and management of these activities and this unit will provide students with the tools to be able to apply the basic principles of tourism planning and management of international tourism. This will be achieved through the exploration and examination of different approaches to the various aspects of what makes up international tourism through case studies and the input from experts in the industry.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to introduce and familiarize the student with the planning processes, infrastructure, internal dynamics and management of the most important aspects of international tourism, including package tours, business and leisure travel, MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and events) and current trends. After an outline of the concept of international tourism, students will be introduced to these various approaches and aspects of international tourism.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- demonstrate the relevance of planning and management and their relationship with tourism;
- describe the components of the tourism industry, motivations for tourism, tourism systems, data limitations in tourism and explain major social and economic changes that have contributed to the growth of tourism;
- list historical and geographical factors that have contributed to the growth of tourism and analyze important theories regarding tourism planning and management;
- demonstrate understanding of the human environment and tourism impact;
- analyze economic, social and cultural factors and processes;
- demonstrate the need for balance between development, sustainability and tourism;
- examine the tourism infrastructure, tourism stakeholders and key players in tourism management and place these in perspective;
- investigate visitor management structures and processes and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of such structures and processes;
- compare and assess the value of natural, seminatural and human-made resources for the purpose of tourism;
- evaluate tourism transport and its structure;
- demonstrate knowledge of the workings and mechanics of tourism packages;
- demonstrate an understanding of MICE operations (meetings, incentives, conferences and events), and their contribution to the overall tourism product of a destination;
- describe the digital sources and media available to tourism and analyze how technology has transformed tourist behavior, the tourist experience and the management and planning of a destination's image.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- describe and compare the planning and management processes in view of growth or decline of tourism and other tourism impacts regarding economy, culture and social aspects;
- analyze and provide criticism on life-cycle model of tourism destinations and its impact and solutions for planning and management;
- plan a basic model for positive management and planning solutions for the negative impact of tourism on the environment, both natural and socio-economical;
- apply basic tourism planning and management skills with regard tourism, the host community, the tourism sector, government agencies, the media and non-governmental organizations (NGOs);
- apply basic tourism planning and management skills with regard to transport issues, the individual aspects of tourism packages and MICE;
- demonstrate basic knowledge of how to deal with digital sources and media with regard the self-image and the public opinion of a tourism destination.
