TITLE Research Methods 2

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Tourism Management

DESCRIPTION The study-unit will cover in detail the applied contexts for research including qualitative and quantitative research techniques applied particularly in tourism and hospitality, event management and cultural management research. It will cover the applied nature and principles for research design, leading to the the generation of specified research proposals and an assessment of research design options. The Unit will also cover assessment and analysis for different alternative methods and assessments for applying and using qualitative and quantitative research methodologies against a range of tourism, hospitality, event management and cultural management case examples.

The study-unit will develop student ability to develop a framework for an independent research proposal which will underpin the dissertation/thesis stage of the degree.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to familiarise and equip the student with the practical and applied underpining, knowledge and skills required for undertaking independent academic research study. It will also aim to provide an in-depth understanding of the diverse nature of the research tools available to conduct research, an evaluation of these and how these can be applied to an independent academic research proposal.

The study-unit will enable a student to formulate and analyse research choices and formulate a final research proposal for an independent piece of research or research study of their choice.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Have a complete understanding of how the different phases of research are directly related to each other and how to ensure that a homogeneous and logical research design is followed and sequenced throughout to a specifically defined research project;

    - Comprehend in detail the different phases of the research project ranging from;
    - setting the research framework;
    - writing the research objectives;
    - outlining the research questions and hypotheses when required;
    - applicable methods for data gathering and analysis;and
    - presentation of data;
    - understanding and applying appropriate research ethic applications and processes.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Set out and self analyse a research framework and all relevant research, aims, questions, research objectives and hypotheses (as and when required);
- Assess and propose empirical qualitative and/or quantitative field research in line with the research framework, research questions, research objectives and research hypotheses;
- Assess and and analyse both qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques/ information in line with scientific practices.
- Present an independent research proposal for a specific research investigation.
