DESCRIPTION Individual Research Project conducted by the student on a specific theme agreed upon by the student and his/her tutor and approved by the Board of Studies.

As part of this study-unit there will be a series of 4 seminars where students will be asked to present aspects of their on-going research. These work in progress seminars will allow students to interact together as a group, give and receive feedback from other fellow students and supervisors. Foreign students who are registered for the course and are conducting their research abroad will be requested to make their own presentation and / or attend 'virtually' by means of teleconferencing.

Study-unit Aims:

The main aim of this unit is to conduct investigative research, analyse the data collected and write an academic paper based on the findings.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding

1) Thesis - based:
- Design a research question or hypothesis;
- Design an appropriate research tool;
- Conduct an in-depth literature review;
- Conduct independent research by means of field research using quantitative or qualitative research techniques;
- Analyse data using software tools;
- Write an academic report.

2) Seminars:
- Argue and defend the research problem.

2. Skills

1) Thesis - based:
- Use research skills which are library or internet-based and to collect primary data;
- Use analytical skills to address pertinent problems;
- Write papers for academic purposes.

2) Seminar-based:
- Provide and receive constructive criticism from a group of colleagues;
- Argue and defend a point of view;
- Present an argument within a given time-frame.

ADDITIONAL NOTES **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.
