DESCRIPTION This study-unit focuses on the translation of four specific genres each year. It analyses various source texts and target texts pairs pertaining to the different genres in order to identify translatorial challenges related to each genre and discuss the strategies applied by translators. Notions such as style, ideology, creativity and personal preferences will be discussed. Theory is complemented by practice: in the practical component of the study-unit students will translate excerpts from each genre and will reflect on both the process and product of translation. Moreover, we will critically discuss some of the problems encountered during the translation process, alternative translation solutions generated during the process, and final solutions opted for by the students.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To enable students to understand the main theories, concepts, approaches and processes in literary translation, and to establish links between theory and practice;
- To hone students' skills in the translation of various specific genres and the particular issues related to each;
- To enable students to practise translating texts in four genres.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- demonstrate an understanding of the core theoretical concepts, approaches and processes involved in the translation of genre specific literary texts;
- critically analyse and evaluate translated literary texts.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- define and evaluate translation problems, find suitable solutions, and justify translation choices and decisions they take while translating texts in these four genres;
- draw on theory to arrive at appropriate translatorial solutions;
- critically reflect on their own translation practice.
