DESCRIPTION | The study-unit provides specific skills and training in the translation of a foreign language (Italian, French, German, Spanish, Arabic or Chinese, subject to availability) into the students' native language (subject to availability), or alternatively from Maltese to English. Given texts on various topics and in different linguistic registers will be analyzed from various aspects (linguistic, stylistic, cultural, pragmatic, etc.) and the cultural competence of the students in their source language of choice shall be strengthened. Students will be required to provide adequate translations based on the analysis performed. The work will be then be discussed and critically evaluated in order for students to improve their translation skills through the choice of the appropriate strategies and a better awareness of the possible cultural and pragmatic pitfalls translation from their chosen source language may involve. Study-Unit Aims: - To familiarise students with a wide variety of texts in their source language of choice; - To render students aware of the challenges and diverse consequences of cultural transfer in translation; - To provide students with the skills required for text analysis in a different language and its importance for effective and adequate translation; - To train students in the translation of a wide variety of texts in a foreign language of their choice into their native language, or from Maltese to English. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Provide adequate translations of a variety of texts in their source language of choice into their native language, or from Maltese to English; - Recognise the underlying socio-cultural connotations in the source texts and their importance in the translation process; - Apply the text analysis and the translation strategies acquired in the course to their translation of texts from their source language of choice in this study-unit. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Perform text analysis in their source language of choice in order to provide an adequate translation of texts from that language; - Identify the pragmatic and cultural challenges posed by the text in their source language of choice; - Transfer culture-specific elements appropriately into texts in the target language; - Mediate between cultures in written texts to provide effective communication.
