DESCRIPTION | This practical study-unit focuses on media accessibility and inclusive arts and cultural spaces for media the d/Deaf and hard of hearing and the blind and partially sighted. It provides students with the necessary theoretical and practical know-how that can be applied in a professional context. EU legislation has led most European broadcasters to subtitle content for the deaf and hard-of-hearing, and to audio describe a minimum quota of their broadcast content. Subtitling for the d/Deaf and hard of hearing (SDH) and Audio Description (AD) for the visually impaired are the two main accessibility modes explored in this study-unit. Students will practise SDH applied to media products and AD applied to art and artifacts exhibited in local museums and cultural heritage sites, therefore contributing to the creation of inclusive audio guides for the public. The study-unit explores a universalist approach that aims to provide linguistic and sensory access to all, irrespective of impairments. It also promotes an integrated access approach that considers accessibility in the early stages of creation, writing, and production. These approaches help to better accommodate and smoothly blend in linguistic and sensory access while ensuring a pleasant, dynamic, inclusive, and engaging experience for all. The local cultural scene provides an ideal setting for the development of such innovative and experimental approaches. Local inclusivity guidelines will be provided and applied. Guidelines and specifications belonging to other countries and territories will also be provided and discussed. Study-Unit Aims: - To teach students media and arts access modes and techniques; - To draw awareness towards the need for inclusive arts and media and the need for professional training in the field; - To enable the implementation and development of accessibility in local media and cultural spaces. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study unit the student will be able to: - identify accessibility needs in cultural spaces; - identify ways to make audiovisual content more inclusive; - identify adequate access modes, techniques, and approaches. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - create subtitles for the d/Deaf and hard of hearing; - create audio descriptions for the blind and partially sighted; - create inclusive audio guides for cultural and artistic spaces; - provide accessibility consultancy to media broadcasters, filmmakers and producers, film directors, art historians, museum curators, and theatre directors.
