DESCRIPTION | This study-unit focuses on language enhancement and aims to give students an awareness of the structural aspects of their B or C languages, particularly for retour/relay interpreting. The emphasis of the study-unit is on production rather than reception so that students will eventually be able to speak clearly in appropriate styles and registers. They will interpret different text types in terms of function, audience and effectiveness. The study-unit aims to refine the students’ linguistic, sociolinguistic and pragmatic competences through a variety of exercises, including fluency, paraphrasing, summarising and improvisation exercises, note-taking exercises and sight translations. Study-Unit Aims: - Develop the students’ linguistic skills to help them further develop their interpretation abilities; - Increase the students’ proficiency in their B or C languages through interpretation and related exercises; - Make the students aware of the linguistic and cultural aspects of their B or C languages; - Introduce the students to different styles and registers. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Have a better insight into the linguistic skills required for retour and/or relay interpreting; - Distinguish between different styles and registers in their B or C languages. - Identify the key linguistic and cultural aspects of their B or C languages. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Effectively apply the skills acquired to all interpretation modes, including consecutive interpretation and sight translation; - Switch between different styles and registers in retour and/or relay interpreting. ADDITIONAL NOTES | The students’ A language (native language) must be Maltese. Students must be proficient in English or Italian as a B language (near-native level). If they do not have a B language, they must have two C languages (official EU languages, one of which must be English, French or German). The students’ proficiency will be assessed prior to the course through a compulsory aptitude test. Additional B languages may be added in the future. The course description will be revised annually based on the language profiles in demand with the EU interpreting services and the available resources. The current profile is: A + B or A + CC.
