DESCRIPTION The skills acquired in TIS5026 will be consolidated in this study-unit, which trains the students in retour/relay techniques.

Normally interpreters work into their mother tongue. Some interpreters know a second language well enough to be able to work into that language from their mother tongue. This is called "retour" interpreting, which is becoming increasingly important within the European Union and other international institutions. A small number of interpreters know their second active language so well that they are able to interpret into that language from all the languages in their language combination. Retour interpreting is especially useful to provide relays out of lesser-known languages such as Maltese into more widespread languages. The students will also be trained in relay techniques.

Students will be required to provide simultaneous interpretation of speeches of at least 10-12 minutes from their A language into their B language or from two C languages into their A language, accurately reproducing the content of the original and using appropriate terminology and register. The speeches used will confront the students with a diversity of subject areas, styles and registers, and their length, information density and degree of technicality and specificity will increase as the study-unit progresses.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Train students for simultaneous interpretation from their A language into their B language or from two C languages into their A language;
- Provide the analytical skills required for simultaneous interpretation;
- Teach students how to effectively prepare for retour/relay interpretation.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Interpret in a simultaneous mode from their A language into their B language or from two C languages into their A language;
- Act as a conference interpreter, confidently working in retour/relay mode.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Work as an interpreter in retour/relay mode;
- Provide interpretation during conferences and bilateral meetings.

ADDITIONAL NOTES The students’ A language (native language) must be Maltese. Students must be proficient in English or Italian as a B language (near-native level). If they do not have a B language, they must have two C languages (official EU languages, one of which must be English, French or German). The students’ proficiency will be assessed prior to the course through a compulsory aptitude test.

Additional A and B languages may be added in the future.

The course description will be revised annually based on the language profiles in demand with the EU interpreting services and the available resources.
