DESCRIPTION | The study-unit looks at the various representations of interactive media and the fluid nature of the digital canvas as the communicative and distributive platform for art and design. The study-unit covers interface design, through compositional, typographic, interactive and design principles. Students will tackle the processes and techniques required to design and develop interfaces which are not only well composed and user-friendly, but that fluidly adapt to devices. Through projects they will be encouraged to explore ways of communicating through an interface using narrative, movement, sound, adaptation and user response. Study-Unit Aims: - Expose the Students to current and avant-garde examples of use of visual interfaces and interaction; - Give students the required skills to design and implement interactive interfaces and websites. - Encourage experimentation, lateral thinking and challenging of the norms. - Foster a culture of critical, self reflection and peer evaluation. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Understand the concepts of Interaction Design; - Understand the need for standards and conventions; - Know about alternative, left-field and experimental interface design; - Be familiar with the required scripts, software and media; - Design original, engaging and thought provoking user interfaces. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Be conversant with the fundamentals of visual literacy in the context of Interface design; - Be able to design and implement interfaces according to aesthetic and visual literacy models; - Have a working knowledge of HTML and CSS.
